Turning Stone into Climate Action

Discover how crushed basalt removes CO₂ from the air — naturally, safely, and permanently through Enhanced Weathering.

What is Enhanced Weathering?

Enhanced Weathering (EW) accelerates the natural breakdown of rocks like basalt to capture CO₂. In the presence of water, basalt releases calcium and magnesium which bind CO₂ and form stable carbonates in soils and waters.

  • Proven geochemistry — no added chemicals required
  • Compatible with agriculture
  • Scalable and globally available

Why Basalt?

Basalt is rich in the elements that bind CO₂ (Mg, Ca, Fe), is non‑toxic, and already widely used in agriculture and construction. Compared to other rocks, basalt offers a strong balance of CO₂ capacity, safety, and cost.

What Makes Balkan Basalt Special

  • Chemistry: CaO 9.83%, MgO 6.62%, Fe₂O₃ 14.01%
  • Safe for agriculture: Nickel < 0.01%
  • Large reserve: ~110M tons suitable for EW
  • Estimated lifetime CO₂ capacity: 22–27.5M tons
  • Verified by Deltares Study (2025)

Measured & Modeled Impacts

  • Rule of thumb: 4–5 tons basalt → 1 ton CO₂
  • Baseline: up to 10% CO₂ by mass can be captured over time
  • Field results vary with pH, rainfall, grain size, biology

Carbon Credit Certification

Basalt EW projects can align with leading carbon removal methodologies:

  • Puro Standard (ICROA‑endorsed)
  • Isometric Protocols (science‑based MRV)

We can support partners on MRV design and certification pathways.

Co‑Benefits in Agriculture

  • Raises soil pH and reduces acidification
  • Improves nutrient retention (N, P, K, Mg)
  • Boosts crop yields and resilience to stress
  • No heavy metal accumulation observed in key crops
