About Us
Miners of premium Albanian basalt for roads, rail, and ports—building today’s infrastructure and enabling tomorrow’s climate solutions.
A working mine. A clear mission.
Our Corporate Profile
Founded in 2015, Balkan Basalt Holding B.V. is a Dutch company operating a premium basalt mining site in Spec, Albania, through its subsidiary Balkan Basalt Shpk. Headquartered in Tirana, the company employs 12 staff and works with long-term logistics and outsourcing partners.
Balkan Basalt holds all permits for mining operations through 2050, formalized in the presence of the Dutch ambassador and Albanian officials. With strong government relations, a turnover-linked revenue agreement, and proven profitability, the company is a trusted supplier for global industrial markets and regenerative applications.
Our Mission
At Balkan Basalt, our mission is to responsibly extract and supply premium basalt for the world’s infrastructure while unlocking its natural power to restore soils, capture CO₂, and drive measurable climate impact.
By combining geological expertise with innovation, including the tokenization of our reserves, we connect industry, agriculture, and sustainability in a transparent, scalable way — building lasting value for our partners and the planet.
Our Basalt Reserves
Set in Spaç, near the town of Reps in northern Albania, our quarry sits a 1.5-hour drive from Tirana. The site spans 47 hectares and contains an exceptional 220 million tonnes of high-grade basalt formed in ancient geological layers.
This is a working mine in the classic sense: benches cut into the mountainside, a primary rock breaker feeding conveyors, graded stockpiles building through the day. Experienced crews, sturdy machines, and a safety-first routine give the operation a straightforward, no-nonsense character.
Today, Balkan Basalt produces around 360,000 tonnes per year for customers worldwide. With investment in a second production line beside the current plant—and a third line on the opposite flank—annual output can rise beyond 1 million tonnes to meet long-term demand.
Our basalt is uniquely valuable: it contains no heavy metals, making it one of the few sources in Europe approved as a natural fertilizer. That chemistry underpins our dual market—industrial strength for roads, rail, and marine works, and green applications for soil remineralization and climate projects.
Our Planet's Basalt Reserves
While basalt covers much of the Earth, 90% lies beneath the oceans; only a rare 10% sits above sea level where it can be mined economically. In an era of scarce new permits, our licensed reserves are a strategic asset—reliable, large-scale, and ready for decades of responsible production.

Official Support from the Municipality of Mirditë
The Municipality of Mirditë, where our mining site is located, has issued an official letter expressing its full support for Balkan Basalt Shpk’s Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) project.
The local government states that it highly values Balkan Basalt’s Green Project and will actively support its implementation. The municipality recognizes that this initiative will not only benefit the region but also strengthen the community’s role in the global fight against climate change.
This endorsement is a significant milestone for Balkan Basalt. It confirms that our green applications strategy — particularly ERW for CO₂ sequestration and soil remineralization — is aligned with local development priorities.
